Components of Ink Cartridges

An ink cartridge is just one of the many types of cartridges used by printers today. There are also several different types of printers, all of which use the respective cartridges they are meant to use in printing. An inkjet printer, for example uses ink cartridges, which usually contain the ink that is used to produce hardcopy printouts.

There are some major components of all types of ink cartridges. Ink cartridges usually have ink reservoirs that are partitioned. The number of partitions, however, differs with the different types of ink cartridges. While some cartridges may have a single partition, others have more than three.

Inkjet printers usually use heat to print. That means that the ink within the cartridges is only controlled with the help of heat. In fact, each reservoir or partition in a cartridge normally has a thermal element which has a resistor.

When a user prompts the computer to print, the electronic signal is usually communicated straight to the printer. The printer then receives this command and a resultant electronic signal is sent to the heating element within the cartridge partitions. This causes heating of the resistor and the ink within it starts to vaporize and increase in volume, hence forcing some of the ink out of the cartridge. This is done depending with the material being printed.

The material intended to be printed determined the type of ink within an inkjet printer. This is because there is ink that is specifically meant for printing photos while others are just meant to print documents. Apart from that, ink cartridges either contain black or all of the primary colors. The latter is very useful in color printing.

Some ink cartridges also have printhead. These are usually used with printers that do not originally come with printheads. Such cartridges are usually more costly than ones that do not have the heads. Additionally, printers that do not come with printer’s heads are cheaper than other types of printers.
